THE LANGUAGE OF DEFEAT--LIFE’S MIRROR

   A Jot From John

Israelites: “It had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness” (Exodus 14:12.) “We are not going to succeed; so it would have been better to continue in slavery.” Some today say the same with reference to spiritual matters.

Felix: “When I have a more convenient season.” (Acts 24:24.) The language of procrastination is the language of defeat.

Israelites: “We did tell thee.” (Exodus 14:12.) “We told you so.” Defeated before they started.

Elijah: “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life.” (1 Kings 19:4.) Was discouraged and the language of discouragement is the language of defeat.

Elijah: “I, even I only, am left.” (1 Kings 19:14.) “There is no one to help me, and I can’t stem the tide by myself.

Spies: “They are stronger than we; we were in our own sight as grasshoppers.” (Numbers 13:31-33.) Lacked confidence in self.

One-talent man: “I was afraid.” (Matthew 25:25.) Fear keeps many from using their talents.

Moses: “They will not follow me.” (Exodus 4:1.) Lack of confidence in the other fellow.

Moses: “I am not eloquent.”(Exodus 4:10.)“I can’t talk.) JBD

LIFE’S MIRROR

There are loyal hearts, there are spirits brave,
There are souls that are pure and true;
Then give to the church the best you have,
And the best will come back to you.

Give love and love to your life will flow,
A strength to your utmost need;
Have faith, and a score of hearts will show
Their faith in your word and deed.

Give truth and your gift will be paid in kind,
And honor will honor meet;
And a smile that is sweet will surely find,
A smile that is just as sweet.

For life is a mirror of king and slave,
‘Tis just what we are and do;

Then give to the church the best you have                                               And the best will come to you. (Anon)
