As Christians, we are commanded to give into the church treasury every first day of the week as we have prospered (1 Corinthians 16:2). There is no set amount we are to give as under the Old Covenant, where the Jews were commanded to give ten percent of their increase (cf. Deuteronomy 14:22). But as one grows in the faith of Christ, his giving should increase as he gives cheerfully and liberally in proportion to his income (cf. Mark 12:41-44), while understanding that he is under a better covenant (Hebrews 8:6).
But how much should a Christian save for himself and his family? What guidance does the Bible offer, and how should one balance how much he saves with how much he gives? First of all, saving money is never condemned in the Bible; rather, it is the love of money that is condemned (1 Timothy 6:10). As that verse continues, the love of money will cause one to stray from the faith and into sin which only leads to sorrow. So when a Christian ponders how much he should save, he must know that his first obligation is to the Lord's church. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you (Matthew 6:33 NKJV).
After he has decided how much to give to the Lord's church, then he can look at what he has left over, after other obligations, to save. When one thinks upon this matter, he should be reminded that he cannot take his savings with him when he dies (1 Timothy 6:7). Thus to be stingy with one's money would be foolish. However, a Christian must provide for his family (1 Timothy 5:8) which would include having some money saved up for emergencies, foreseeable expenses, and long term plans that might include education, housing, and retirement. These plans could also include passing down one's wealth to the next generation, for the wise man stated, A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous (Proverbs 13:22). It would also be wise to consider leaving some of your wealth to the church so that the gospel can be preached to future generations in this community. If more Christians did so, think of the possibilities!
How much should you save? The Bible does not go into specifics. But if you’re thinking on money is guided by the word of God, then you can manage your money efficiently with the assurance of God's approval. We must remember that we are stewards of God's blessings, and that includes money. With that in mind, the Bible commends those who save instead of those who spend foolishly: There is desirable treasure, and oil in the dwelling of the wise, but a foolish man squanders it (Proverbs 21:20). As we walk with God, we will gain wisdom in how much to give and to save as we come to think like Him. Through wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches (Proverbs 24:3,4).
But beware because many have let money come before their devotion to God. Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life (1 Timothy 6:17-19). If you put your trust in God instead of your savings account, and be liberal in giving and good works, then you will be laying up treasure in your heavenly account which will be waiting for you in eternity.
